Quarry House Tavern is a true dive bar in Silver Spring Maryland, just up the street from the DC border. Quarry House was a Silver Spring favorite, but a few years ago a fire hit which left Quarry House without a home. Fortunately, they were able to open a temporary location across the street to keep business flowing.
I had not lived in the area before the fire happened. When I moved here, my friends took me to the temporary location. It became a semi-regular hang out spot for us. I enjoyed going to Quarry House because it was the one place in Silver Spring where you could get real “bar food.” The burgers and half smokes are amazing, but the biggest hit are probably their tots. If I go to Quarry House, I want tots. They are the best, crispiest tater tots I have ever had. I am not a huge fan of tater tots normally, but these changed my mind. These tots really give this place that dive bar feel. (My personal recommendation is to get the patty melt with tots and a beer of your choice).
Look at those tots!
When the temporary location was open, I wasn’t overly sold on the “bar” aspect. There were only three beers on tap and a decent list of bottled beer. So, I really just went for the burgers and tots, and to have a good time with my friends.
The good news is that Quarry House reopened in their original location a couple months ago. My friends and I went on opening day (though we had to wait in a line for the better part of an hour before we got inside).
I was rather impressed by the new (old) location. The food was just what I had come to expect with Quarry House, but they truly kicked it up with the beer. They built this beautiful new tap which greatly expanded their drafts list. That greatly excited me. When I go to a bar, I want to drink draft beer. I can buy bottled beer to drink at home (and buy it for much cheaper) but I don’t have a personal beer tap. While I don’t live in Silver Spring anymore, I am glad this place is up and running in its new location. I have a lot of friends in Silver Spring still, so I am sure we will be making regular visits here.
In fact, we just went on Tuesday. This week it is Burger Week, and Quarry House is running a special. We got our burgers and tots for a total of $7 (normally $10-$12). I have been working very hard on revamping my eating and lifestyle, so I didn’t want to ruin my week by eating a burger. However, one of my keys to leading a healthy lifestyle is finding balance. I tend to lose control of my healthy eating habits when I deprive myself of my cravings. So, I decided on Tuesday that a burger and tots was just what I needed after a long and stressful day at work. I did an hour of Zumba before meeting my friends at the bar, so I really didn’t feel too guilty about the splurge. It delicious and hit that bar food cravings and allowed me to keep better control of my eating the rest of the week.
If you are in the DC area, I highly recommend checking out Quarry House Tavern on Georgia Ave. Maybe Guy Fieri should hit this place up on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
